About The Rhodes Trust Scholarship

Established through the Will of Cecil John Rhodes in 1902, the Rhodes Scholarships are the oldest and perhaps most prestigious international scholarship programme in the world, enabling outstanding young people from around the world to undertake full-time study at the University of Oxford.

The Rhodes Scholarship is merit-based, with the purpose of developing public-spirited leaders, and promoting international understanding and peace through an international community of Scholars.

Successful Rhodes Scholars come to the UK for two or more years and can apply to study most full-time postgraduate courses in almost any field offered by Oxford University.

Who can Apply for the Rhodes Trust Scholarship?

Nationality: Applicants must be citizens of an eligible country.

Residency: Applicants must have been residents in one or more of the above-listed countries for at least five of the last ten years.

Age: Applicants must meet one of the following age criteria:

  • 18-24 years old by 1st October 2025 (born between 1st October 2000 and 2nd October 2007), or
  • 18-25 years old by 1st October 2025 (born between 1st October 1999 and 2nd October 2007) for medical, dental, pharmaceutical, law, and engineering students to allow for professional internships, or
  • Under 27 years old by 1st October 2025 (born after 1st October 1998) and completed a first undergraduate degree after 1st October 2024.

Academic Achievement: Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree with a First-Class Honours Degree (or equivalent) or the highest classification awarded by their university (e.g., Distinction in Medicine, Dentistry, or Pharmacy).

English Proficiency: Applicants must have a sufficiently high level of English to meet the University of Oxford’s language proficiency requirements or apply for a waiver.

  • Literary and scholastic attainments (academic excellence)
  • Energy to use one’s talents to the full (as demonstrated by mastery in areas such as sports, music, debate, dance, theatre, and artistic pursuits, particularly where teamwork is involved)

What is the Benefit of the Rhodes Trust Scholarship?

The scholarship benefits include:

  • The Rhodes Scholarship covers the University of Oxford course fees.
  • An annual stipend is provided, which for the 2024/25 academic year is £19,800 (£1,650 per month) from which Scholars pay all living expenses, including accommodation.
  • The stipend is not sufficient to cover partners or dependents.
  • The Rhodes Trust covers the fee required to apply to study at the University of Oxford.
  • Fees for a student visa and the associated International Health Surcharge (IHS), which grants access to the UK’s National Health Service, are covered.
  • Two economy-class flights to and from the UK are provided for the beginning and end of studies at Oxford.
  • Scholars receive a settling-in allowance upon arrival in Oxford.
  • Scholars who transition to a second course of study at Oxford will receive assistance for visa renewal fees and further IHS applications.
