The intro statement says, “effective immediately, the Department of State has paused all visa issuances to diversity immigrant visa applicants“.
Why are diversity visa issuances being paused?
Reasons provided: First, it speaks about the shooting at the Brown University, as well as the killing of the MIT professor that was suspected to have been committed by an individual admitted to the United States through the diversity visa program.
The State Department says in this guidance that the pause will allow the department to undertake a review of the screening and voting protocols in the diversity visa program. Screening and voting definitely has to do with interviews and diversity visa issuances. The review will address any vulnerabilities in the process, that is the process of interviewing and issuing diversity visas.
The title of the next paragraph asks, what happens to my diversity visa appointment? This section is about appointment or interviews in the diversity visa program. And then next we have, are there any exceptions? Meaning, are there any exceptions to what is discussed above concerning the suspension of diversity visa issuances?
The answer here is no, there are no exceptions to this guidance.
Then finally, does this affect my current valid visa? And there as well, no. No diversity visa or other visas have been revoked as part of this guidance.
Diversity Visa Issuance Updated Guidance
So, that is the most recent update from the State Department concerning the suspension of the diversity visa program. And as you may have realized, the guidance speaks about visa issuance activities. In other words, the issuance of diversity visas. It also speaks about interviews for diversity visa cases that were already selected. But one thing that it doesn’t speak about at all is the DV 2027 lottery. In nowhere in the guidance does it mention the DV 2027 lottery.
Nowhere in the guidance does it speak of suspending or halting the diversity visa lottery. It only speaks about diversity visa issuance activities and interviews for the DV program.
As you may be aware, the diversity visa program can be divided into three phases. There is the diversity visa lottery. There is also the selection and notification of applicants. And then finally, there is the interview or visa processing phase.
So, this guidance speaks about the final phase, that is interviews and visa processing. But it does not in any way mention the first phase, which has to do with the diversity visa lottery. And that distinction is critical. Because suspending diversity visa issuance activities is not the same as suspending the diversity visa lottery.
And so, based on this fact, the fact that the guidance does not in any way mention the diversity visa lottery DV 2027, we can draw the conclusion that the lottery is not affected by the suspension of the diversity visa program that was announced by the U.S Home Security Secretary just over a week ago.
DV 2027 Lottery Latest Updates
Some of you may ask, then, when do I expect the diversity visa lottery to actually take place?
For me, the lottery should have taken place earlier than now. But I want to think that the holidays, the end of the year holidays, is what has been preventing the State Department from launching the DV 2027 lottery. Hopeful, the coming couple of weeks will be a crucial time for you who are DV 2027 prospective applicants. Keep your eyes and ears open during the course of this week or next week, and highest up to the middle of the month of January, 2026. Hopefully, DV 2027 lottery will be announced.
